We created an automated workflow to process public domain book content to create three output formats:
Most schools were using printed versions of the titles because of the relationship of the content to page and chapter numbers. The solution created new print versions of the selected titles and fixed format ePub files that were paginated to match the corresponding printed versions. Each version was designed to make reading easy and comfortable. We optimized pages for readability, paying particular attention to font choices, line length and line spacing to provide a comfortable reading experience for young readers.
Each student receives a printed copy of the book and 2 digital versions for use as needed.
This allows teachers to make page assignments that can be completed in either the digital or printed versions of the books. The digital versions allowed students to make notes, underline and communicate 1:1 with their teachers.
The reflowable version of the book was particularly useful for reading on small screen devices such as phones.
Currently there are 30 titles in the catalog, and more are being added as requested by our client's school customers.
Digital textbooks have long been a disrupter in the publishing industry. Transitioning to digital has been slower, however, for K-12 schools.
We surveyed 3,194 schools about their use of digital materials and devices via telephone calls. Survey data shows that schools are increasingly providing 1:1 device access to students, and larger schools are emphasizing digital textbooks for faster access to quality materials, easier distribution and administration, and increased flexibility for teachers and students.
The survey was conducted prior to the outbreak of the Coronavirus Pandemic and reflects the environment prior to school closings and the implementation of distance/on-line learning. The report indicated that only 58% of responding schools with more than 500 students were using digital textbooks. Given continued or recurring school closures and planned hybrid models, we concluded that more schools will be distributing textbooks and materials digitally in the 2020/2021 school year.
We created the survey, collected and analyzed the data and produced a report for our client and a summary report that our client sent to survey participants.
